Crystal Care for Beginners: 7 Essentials
If you have just bought your first crystal, welcome. The basics are simpler than the internet makes them look. Here are the seven things we wish every new initiate knew on day one.
Start with One, Not Twenty
The most common beginner mistake is buying a huge collection at once. A single well-chosen stone that you actually carry and ritualize with is worth more than a shelf of untouched ones. If you are unsure, our Crystal Rite takes 60 seconds.
Cleanse It on Day One
Every new crystal has passed through many hands and environments. Cleanse it the day you receive it - the simplest method is to leave it on a windowsill overnight during a full or waxing moon.
Set a Clear Intention
Hold the stone in your receiving hand, close your eyes, and silently state what you want it to support. Be specific: "help me sleep" beats "good vibes."
Store Crystals Separately
Harder crystals (quartz family, Mohs 7) can scratch softer ones (selenite, malachite). Use a cloth pouch or individual compartments in a jewelry box.
Learn Which Cannot Get Wet
Never submerge selenite, malachite, kyanite, lepidolite, fluorite, pyrite, or celestite. When in doubt, use moonlight or sage smoke instead of water.
Avoid Direct Midday Sun
Amethyst, rose quartz, citrine, and fluorite can all fade in prolonged direct sunlight. Charge them in moonlight or gentle morning sun only.
Cleanse Regularly
Once a week if you use the crystal daily. Once a month minimum for decorative pieces. After any emotionally intense day for a stone you were carrying.
Your First Starter Trio
If you are building from scratch, these three stones cover most daily uses:
- Amethyst - calm, sleep, meditation
- Rose quartz - love, self-compassion
- Clear quartz - amplification, clarity
