How to Cleanse and Charge Your Crystals

By CrystalLuck Atelier · 2026-04-14 · 6 min

Crystals are said to absorb and hold energy - your own and that of the environments they pass through. Regular cleansing is the simple practice of resetting that energetic state.

Why Cleanse at All

In crystal-healing tradition, stones absorb emotional and environmental energy over time. Cleansing returns them to a neutral, receptive state - ready to hold a new intention. Most practitioners cleanse weekly if using a stone daily, or any time after an intense emotional event.

Method One · Moonlight

The most universal cleansing method. Place your crystals on a windowsill or outdoor surface overnight, ideally during a full moon. Moonlight works for every stone, including water-sensitive ones. Bring them inside before direct midday sun, which can fade colored stones.

Method Two · Sacred Smoke

Pass each crystal slowly through the smoke of burning white sage, palo santo, or cedar for 20 to 30 seconds. Safe for every crystal and the preferred method for sensitive stones like selenite and malachite.

Method Three · Running Water

For durable stones (Mohs hardness 6 or higher) such as amethyst, rose quartz, clear quartz, citrine, and black tourmaline, a brief rinse under cool tap water is safe. Hold the crystal in the stream for 30 seconds and imagine the water carrying away any stagnant energy, then pat dry.

Never use water on: selenite, malachite, kyanite, lepidolite, fluorite, pyrite, celestite.

Method Four · Sound

Place crystals near a singing bowl, tuning fork, or bell. Ring the instrument for 30 to 60 seconds. The sound waves reset the vibrational field of the stones. Completely safe for every crystal and a favorite for people with large collections.

Method Five · Dry Sea Salt

Bury the crystal in a bowl of dry sea salt for a few hours. Discard the salt afterward (do not reuse - it is said to now hold the absorbed energy). Safe for most hard stones but avoid with water-sensitive crystals.

How to Charge After Cleansing

Charging is different from cleansing — it is about infusing the stone with your intention. After cleansing, hold the crystal in your receiving hand, close your eyes, and silently or aloud state what you want the stone to support. Then place it in moonlight overnight or on a clear quartz cluster or selenite plate to amplify the charge. Many practitioners keep a master amethyst tumble beside their altar purely for charging smaller stones.

The Rite: How to Cleanse a Crystal with Moonlight

1
Check the weather

Confirm that tonight is a full or waxing moon and that it is not raining.

2
Place on a windowsill

Set the crystal on a clean surface that will receive moonlight overnight.

3
State your intention

Thank the crystal and ask the moonlight to release any absorbed energy.

4
Leave overnight

Leave the stone in place for at least 6 hours.

5
Retrieve before midday

Collect the crystal in the morning before strong sunlight reaches it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I cleanse my crystals?
Cleanse weekly if you wear or use a stone daily, and any time after an intense emotional event, an argument, illness, or visiting a crowded place. New crystals should always be cleansed before first use.
Which crystals should never get wet?
Selenite, malachite, kyanite, lepidolite, fluorite, pyrite, celestite, hematite, and angelite. These are either soluble, soft, or contain metals that oxidize. Use moonlight, sage smoke, or sound for these stones instead.
Can I cleanse multiple crystals at once?
Yes. Moonlight, sage smoke, and sound work for any number of crystals simultaneously. For salt or water methods, cleanse stones individually so you can monitor each one and avoid scratching softer stones against harder ones.
What is the difference between cleansing and charging?
Cleansing removes absorbed or stagnant energy and resets the stone to a neutral state. Charging follows cleansing and infuses the stone with a specific intention you set. Most practitioners cleanse first, then charge.
How do I know my crystal needs cleansing?
Common signs: the stone feels heavier or "sticky" to hold, its color appears duller, you feel less of a response when working with it, or you have used it through a difficult emotional period. Trust your intuition — when in doubt, cleanse.
Does the moon need to be full to cleanse crystals?
No. Full moon is the most powerful, but any moonlight (waxing, waning, or new moon) cleanses effectively. Even on overcast nights, lunar energy still reaches the stone.
